Late afternoon sun provides heat without the burning,
Light without squinting,
An unshaded warmth.
As if peace was airborne.
To hold and caress me.
Finally recognized on the road to town,
The strangers are no more,
But rather friends of the most intimate type.
Breaking break together as the artist and Jesus hold another meeting,
To be finished in another place.
Always together …
Artist David Wilkie painted “Supper at Emmaus” during a trip to the Holy Land, intending to finish it on his return to England. He died during the voyage.
